Macomb - VITA Program - Necessary Documents

Failure to bring all required documentation with you to your appointment will delay your assistance. We require below documents:

  • Identification:
    • Valid driver's license or state ID for each adult on the return
    • Social Security card for each adult and child on the return
  • Income Documentation:
    • All W-2's (incl. gambling/lottery winnings)
    • All 1099's (incl. Social Security, pension, unemployment, interest/dividends, misc. income)
    • DHHS Assistance (annual statement)
    • Child Support (annual statement)
    • Alimony amounts received
    • Letter from Social Security for SSI Income
    • 1095's for Market Place Medical Insurance & Employer Insurance
  • Proof of Expenses:
    • Any and all childcare expenses
    • Property tax statement
    • Mortgage interest statement
    • Monthly rent amount (if applicable)
    • January gas bill for heating credit
    • Student loan interest or tuition and course materials
    • Itemized car insurance policy that shows PIP (Personal Injury Protection) coverage
  • Direct Deposit Information:
    • Bank routing number and account number, checking or savings (Debit cards do not have this information on them but checks do)
  • Past Years Completed Tax Returns

Free tax preparation is available to Macomb county residents who cannot afford to pay to have their taxes prepared for them thanks to the VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) program and amazing community volunteers. This program aims to help families avoid high tax prep fees, access all credits they are eligible for and connect families to services and programs that will help them increase their financial stability.

Within minutes of making your appointment, you should receive a confirmation email with a calendar appointment attached to the email. In addition, you will also receive a phone reminder the day before your appointment.
